Imagine telling your average talk-radio listener circa 2009 that a future president would deploy automated surveillance technology and military checkpoints to police American cities; that he’d park your tax dollars inside a corporate behemoth with a slavery-tainted supply chain; that he’d stretch “emergency” authorities to grab powers the Constitution bequeaths to Congress alone. I’m sure most would swear you were referring to Obama — or perhaps the dreaded Hillary.
The punchline, of course, is that you’d be describing “the most conservative president since Reagan”: Donald J. Trump.
The Pentagon confirmed this week that it’s planning a Guard deployment to Chicago, a normalization of military policing that our forebears would’ve recognized as a standing invitation to later abuses. Meanwhile, a federal appeals court held that most of Trump’s recent tariffs were illegal: the emergency law he invoked doesn’t give a president the power to levy duties, as that power remains in Congress’s hands alone. On the heels of a similarly questionable deal with Nvidia, the Trump admin bought a 10% stake in the tech giant Intel this week, even as reporting resurfaced of Intel’s ties to sanctioned Chinese surveillance firms like Uniview, Hikvision, and Cloudwalk. (Apparently socialism is only a problem when a Democrat supports it.)
Let’s call it what it is: militarism, authoritarianism, & corporatism — all sold as “conservatism” to clapping seals.
Without further ado, let’s dive into the stories shaping the week that was…
